MANCHESTER UNITED manager Jose Mourinho had made contact with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane
Mourinho paid £9m to sign the French central defender for Los Blancos back in 2011.
Real’s latest manager Julen Lopetegui is far from convinced by Varane’s credentials.
The 25-year-old was consigned to the bench for the club’s first two La Liga fixtures.
United boss Mourinho was desperate to sign a centre-back in the summer but was left empty-handed.
Plans to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester and Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham never came to fruition.
And given that the Red Devils have conceded six goals in the last two games that need is arguably greater than ever.
France international Varane helped his nation win their second World Cup in Russia this summer.
And according to Don Balon , Mourinho is aiming to take advantage of his insecure situation by tabling a bid for the defender.
Whether United could convince Real to sell to Mourinho who left the club on ad terms remains to be seen.
The European champions tied Varane to a new contract in September of last year.
His deal reportedly contains a huge £180m release clause so United have minimal chance of landing their target on the cheap.
